Church of the Transfiguration

This former 1400 seat Roman Catholic church was built by architect Carl Schmill in 1897 to serve the growing Polish community in Buffalo, NY's East Side. The church contains murals designed by local artist Joseph Mazur as well as unique "pinwheel" patterned stained glass windows. In 1993 Transfiguration and other nearby parishes merged and the church was slated to be torn down. The former parishioners quickly obtained a stay of demolition effectively saving the church. In 1994 the church was sold for $7,000 to the non-profit association 'Paul Francis Associates' and has sat vacant ever since. Time, neglect, and vandalism have taken their toll on the structure and it's future is still very uncertain.
