Yonkers Power StationOpened in 1906, the Yonkers Power Station (sometimes referred to as the Glenwood Power Plant) was created as part of New York Central Railroads Manhattan Terminus expansion. The plant was designed by the Minnesota based architectural firm Reed & Stem to provide power to the newly electrified rail tracks. In the 1930s, the idea of seperate railroad power plants became inefficient and the facility was sold to Consolidated Edison Power Co. Yonkers remained in use as a power plant for 30 more years before it closed in 1963 with the introduction of newer & more efficient power stations along the Hudson. It has remained vacant ever since. In April 2007 a developer announced plans to turn the power plant into a contemporary art museum. |
